In part two of this article, you learned how to experience virtual reality. It starts with hardware that is capable of rendering virtual reality content. The next step is

There are five virtual reality headsets on the market today that are the top players in this relatively new field. There are sure to be more headsets available as more people start adopting VR, but for now, these are the ones you need to know about.

Google Cardboard

Google Cardboard is the cheapest VR headgear available to you out of the top five as it starts around $15, and the name is a clue as to why.

It’s made out of cardboard with embedded lenses in it. You just put your smartphone inside of it, and you’re off to the races.

Cardboard is also one of the easiest to set up and go because it works with any. It’s the perfect beginner’s level of virtual reality.

If you are just getting interested in trying virtual reality or want to show the world to your children this is definitely the easiest and least expensive way to do so.

Samsung Gear VR

Samsung Gear VR is a stepped up version of Google Cardboard in that it uses your phone to render the virtual reality content. But, as its name suggests, you’re limited to using this headset with a Samsung phone.

The Samsung Gear VR is the best smartphone virtual reality headsets currently available and costs $99.

You’ll find that the sensors that this headset offers are an upgrade from the ones in the Google Cardboard set. Plus, the headset is more comfortable to wear. The pictures won’t be as clear as some of the more expensive headsets, but considering it’s running off a smartphone, it’s still pretty amazing.

You’ll also find that the Samsung Gear VR has games and apps created especially for it to get you off to the races in exploring a virtual world.

Sony Playstation VR

virtual reality headset Playstation VR

Sony Playstation VR works with a PlayStation 4 instead of a smartphone or gaming computer. At $399, it’s more pricey than the smartphone viewers, but it does have some advantages that they do not for the price tag.

With this headset, you can interact with things in virtual reality that you cannot with the others.

The graphics are good, but you won’t be seeing things as clearly as the other headsets that are connected to a gaming computer.

Playstation fans will love being able to get into their favorite games like they never have before. But to do so, you will have to purchase a few more accessories to use the full options with this headset, such as the Playstation Camera and Move Controllers.

Another downside for some is that you’ll need to be tethered to your Playstation while using this headset in the same manner as the more expensive headsets that require computers to run.

Oculus Rift

Oculus Rift is a huge step up from the headsets that are powered by smartphones, but you’ll be paying for that power in two ways.

First, the headset is $599. Second, you will need a very good gaming computer that can keep up with the graphics that need to be generated to create that virtual reality world.

If you’re willing to pay the price, you’ll be able to be immersed in the virtual world of your choice.

This headset will track your head movements to help you explore. You are also able to purchase hand controllers to help you interact with the virtual environment better.

However, some may find it a downside that you’ll need to be connected to the gaming computer with a tether that’s not necessary with the smartphone headsets.

HTC Vive

Virtual reality headset HTC Vive

HTC Vive is the penultimate virtual reality headset on the market, and that’s reflected in the $799 price tag.

Also, like the Oculus Rift, you’ll need to be tethered to a high-powered gaming computer. However, what you can accomplish in the virtual reality world can far outshine the cost for a lot of enthusiasts.

With the HTC Vive, you’ll be able to walk around a cleared room and grab the items you find in the virtual world. Just make sure to move your furniture to prevent any busted shins and have enough cable to walk away from your computer.

With the HTC Vive, you’ll be living your science fiction dreams. They have the most immersive content and ability to interact with the virtual reality environment. This is definitely the set to invest in for the long haul.

Wrapping it up

Each of these systems have their own pros and cons, and which one you choose will depend on your budget along with your technical abilities, the content and interaction you want, and how much you plan to use. The Sony Playstation VR is the ultimate experience for gamers, but you might be limited to mostly games with the PS4.

After time, you’ll probably find your own preference in the same manner as some people prefer iPhones and others swear by their Samsung Android phones.

Now that we have covered the VR headsets available on the market, we can take an in depth look at the virtual reality peripherals that are coming out on the market. Some of these are seriously going to rock!
